Sharplin Falls by mark-flammable Sharplin Falls by mark-flammable
This was a great waterfall I went to in the Canterbury foot hills after returning to Christchurch early when our West Coast road trip turned to crap the day after Monro Splash with sickness and fog.

It sits at the bottom of Mt. Summers that I will be doing a weekend tramp over soon. These falls really were massive - a good 5m high with some MASSIVE boulders around!

*EDIT* A couple of localised changes to the processing

Thanks very much Adam... it wasn't the easiest of captures with all the shadows!

That is awesome. I'm very fond of the amount of saturation you use, as well.

Thanks a lot. I really admire the work of Marc Adamus and like to go along the same style as his beautiful shots!

If I were you I couldn't help and go swimming in each and every creek and pond I'd find in such a grand landscape. And also nice capture of course. :)

Nice greens. Good shutterspeed. Blown highlights in the water, though. Nice clarity throughout.

I know about the blown highlights... I was annoyed at myself for that! I am back there soon so might try this same composition with my 10stop ND and blend it with a shot without for the rocks etc.

BTW, do you shoot in RAW? One of the advantages of shooting in RAW is that you can recover many of those blown highlights, unlike jpg. I shot jpg for the longest time, but finally I forced myself to try RAW and now I wished I'd done it years ago.

I resisted shooting RAW because no one actually gave me any good reasons why I should...and I don't do things just because the "herd" tells me to.

Fair enough! Me neither... but I read some reasons why it was good so I did.
I went back to that raw file and double processed it for the water - re uploaded... what do you think now?

Ok thanks... I kinda think now that it looks a little grey... Just looked at one of my favourite Adamus photos [link] and I feel like my whites arent as white now. I guess its a fine line between bright whites and blown out! Do you think I could adjust the levels to bring them up without losing detail?
